How long your video edit will take
"How soon can you send it?" is the second question every client asks, right after the price. The honest answer depends on the type of video, how much footage there is, how quickly feedback comes back and how busy the editor's calendar is. Here are realistic ranges and what moves them.
These are typical turnaround times for a freelance editor, based on my own rate card. Other editors and agencies will differ, but the factors that speed up or slow down a project are the same everywhere.
01
Reels and shorts: one to two days
A single reel from organised footage, with captions, music and one vertical export, usually takes 24 to 48 hours from receiving the footage to the first draft. Monthly batches are scheduled in advance so they arrive on a predictable day. Rush same-day reels are sometimes possible, but they push other work back.
Reels that depend on trending audio or a news moment are the exception. They are worth turning around the same day, so plan them with your editor as "fast-track" slots rather than treating every reel as urgent.
02
YouTube videos: two to three days
A typical 8 to 15 minute YouTube video with retention editing, captions, colour, a thumbnail and chapters takes about 48 to 72 hours. Longer videos, heavy graphics or multiple camera angles take longer. Regular channels on a monthly plan get fixed delivery days each week.
03
Corporate and testimonial videos: three to ten days
A testimonial cut to about a minute takes around three to four days. A corporate profile or training film with brand graphics, subtitles and a social cut usually takes five to ten days, because more people review it and the details matter. Event recaps can be faster when planned in advance.
04
Explainers: one to two weeks
Animated explainers are built from scratch: script, style frames, animation, voice-over and sound. Even a 60 to 90 second explainer typically takes one to two weeks. The script and style approval at the start often decide whether the project finishes on time.
Changing the script after animation has started is the most expensive kind of delay, because finished scenes may need rebuilding. Lock the script and the voice-over first.
05
Weddings: two to three weeks for the edit
Wedding films involve many hours of footage from several days of functions. A highlight film and full ceremony edit typically take two to three weeks of editing time. In wedding season, there may also be a queue before editing starts, which is why many studios quote longer overall delivery times.
06
What slows projects down
Footage arriving in pieces over several days. Missing items such as logos, music choices or speaker names. Feedback sent in many separate messages, or from several people who disagree. Changes to the brief after the first draft. Waiting days or weeks for feedback, after which the project re-enters the editor's queue.
Most delays are not editing time. They are waiting time.
The draft is usually quick. The approvals are what take time.
07
How to get videos back faster
Send everything at once, organised in folders, with a short brief. Include logos, fonts, music references and spellings of names. Agree one decision-maker who will review within a day. Send consolidated, timestamped feedback in one message. Book your editor in advance for time-sensitive work like events and launches.
Ask for a date, not a duration
"Three days" means different things depending on when the clock starts. Ask for the date the first draft will arrive, and agree a date by which you will send feedback. A clear schedule on both sides keeps the project moving.
A fast edit needs fast feedback.
If you have a hard deadline, such as an event, a launch or an ad campaign, say so at the start. A good editor will plan backwards from it and tell you honestly whether it is achievable.
Typical turnaround at a glance
Reel / short 24–48 hours YouTube video 48–72 hours Testimonial 3–4 days Event recap 3–4 days Corporate video 5–10 days Animated explainer 1–2 weeks Wedding (highlight + full) 2–3 weeks
Times are from complete footage to first draft, assuming a clear brief. Revision rounds add time depending on how quickly feedback arrives. Rush work that displaces other scheduled projects is charged 25% extra.
