Why one reel costs ₹300 here and ₹15,000 there

Ask five editors what they charge for "one reel" and you will get five answers, some ten times apart. None of them is necessarily lying. They are quoting for different jobs that happen to share a name.

Freelance job boards in India are full of posts offering ₹50 to ₹450 a reel for bulk work, and some agencies quote ₹10,000 or more for a single 30-second ad. Somewhere in between are most freelancers, including me: I charge ₹1,500 for a reel up to sixty seconds.

The useful question is not "who is cheapest?" but "what exactly is in each quote?". Here are the five things that move the price, in roughly the order they matter.

01

How much thinking the edit needs

The cheapest reels are mechanical: cut the pauses out of a talking-head clip, add auto-captions, drop in a trending sound, export. The expensive ones start with a decision about what the reel is for. Which three seconds open it? What gets cut so the point lands in twenty seconds instead of fifty? That judgement is most of what you are paying for, and it is invisible in the final file.

Ask: "Will you choose the hook and the order, or should I send you a script?"

02

Captions, graphics and sound

Auto-generated captions are nearly free. Captions that are checked word by word, styled to your brand, and timed to the speech take real time — especially for Tamil–English mixed speech, which auto-captioning still gets wrong. Add animated text, product call-outs, sound effects and music that is mixed under the voice rather than over it, and a reel that took twenty minutes now takes two hours.

Ask: "Are captions proofread, and in which language?"

03

The state of the footage

Clean, well-lit clips with good audio are fast to edit. Forty minutes of shaky phone footage with a fan humming in the background is not. Colour-matching clips shot on different days, removing noise, and stabilising handheld shots are all separate jobs that a ₹300 quote assumes you will not need.

04

Revisions and turnaround

Most low quotes include one export and no changes. Mine include two rounds of revisions; after that it is ₹800 a round for short-form. Same-day or next-morning delivery costs more almost everywhere, because it means putting other work aside. If your content calendar is planned a week ahead, you should not be paying rush rates.

Ask: "How many rounds of changes are included, and what does an extra round cost?"

05

Volume

A one-off reel carries all the setup cost: learning your brand, your fonts, your style, your audience. Twelve reels a month spread that across the batch, which is why monthly packs are cheaper per reel almost everywhere, including with me. Bulk rates on job boards are low partly for this reason, and partly because the edits are templated.

Cheap is fine — for the right reel

A ₹300 edit is not a scam. If you post daily, the footage is simple, and you mainly need pauses cut and captions added, a template-based editor may be exactly right. The problem is only when a ₹300 process is expected to produce a reel that has to sell something.

Price the reel by the job it has to do, not by its length.

A rough rule I use with clients: the reels that carry your offer, your launch or your ad spend deserve a proper edit. The everyday "we are open today" posts can be fast and simple.

How to compare two quotes fairly

Send every editor the same brief and ask them to answer the same five questions. Then you are comparing like with like.

For one reel, up to 60 seconds: 1. Do you choose the hook and structure, or do I? 2. Are captions included, proofread, and in which language? 3. Is music licensed for a business account? 4. How many revision rounds, and what does an extra round cost? 5. How long from footage to first draft?

Question three matters more than people think. Business accounts on Instagram have a smaller music library than personal ones, and a reel that gets muted after you post it has to be re-edited anyway.

Quick answers

How much does reel editing cost in India?

It ranges from about ₹50 to ₹450 per reel for bulk, template-style work on job boards, to ₹1,000–₹3,000 for most experienced freelancers, and ₹10,000 or more from agencies that also plan the content. I charge ₹1,500 for a reel up to sixty seconds, with two revision rounds.

Is it cheaper to pay monthly for reels?

Usually, yes. A monthly pack spreads the setup work across many reels and gives the editor a predictable slot for you, so the per-reel price drops. It only makes sense if you will actually post that many.

What should I send my reels editor?

The raw clips in original quality (not WhatsApp-compressed), the logo and fonts you use, one or two reels you like as a reference, and a one-line note on what each reel should make the viewer do.
